Childhood Poems

As a child, I loved just about every subject in school and really enjoyed my teachers. My favorite subject was probably Spelling. During Spelling class, we not only learned our words, but we also got to learn poems. There's something about children and poems that just "go together!" It's like a breath of fresh air. ;)

One of my favorite poets is Robert Louis Stevenson. He was not a strong child and spent many hours laying in his bed. He did have an active imagination. Here are a few poems from A Child's Garden of Verses. This book has about 65 of his poems, including The Lamplighter and My Shadow.

Singing
Robert Louis Stevenson

Of speckled eggs the birdie sings
And nests among the trees;
The sailor sings of ropes and things
In ships upon the seas.

The children sing in far Japan,
The children sing in Spain;
The organ with the organ man
Is singing in the rain.

The Swing
Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air  and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
Rivers and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside-

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown-
Up in the air I go flying again.
Up in the air and down.

Rain
Robert Louis Stevenson

The rain is raining all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea.

Happy Thought
Robert Louis Stevenson

The world is so full of a number of things,
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.

I hope you've enjoyed this small collection of poems. Our weather today is supposed to be rainy and below 60 degrees. I think we're going to stay inside~dry and warm.   :) Have a great day, and thank you for stopping by!

How fun... and a great reminder to include these things in our schoolday! I feel like we are in the homestretch now-- racing to get all our school done by May. But maybe I need to stop and incorporate some poetry in the day. I have already been mulling over introducing selective artists and composers to learn about, so this is the umph I needed.

Have a great day, Donna. I always love visiting you=).

Thanks for the happy reminders of simple things! :) Our family loves the swing because Warren memorized that one in school and recites it when the kids are in the swing! :) We all just read it together! :) Thanks for the happy thoughts!

Donna - just home from Bible study (and errands afterwards) and got your note about Hubbie...so glad he is okay. Thanking the Lord for His protection - even when we don't realize just how much we need it! Hope there are no aches and pains in the hours/days ahead! Thanks for letting me know:)
